Managing Heavy Periods
You’ve come to accept menstruation as a normal part of being a woman. For many women, however, menstruation is anything but normal due to unusually heavy bleeding. Some women report embarassing episodes of flooding their clothes and may even develop a life-threatening anemia (low blood count). Even when your health is not at immediate risk, the quality of life issues raised by heavy bleeding can be numerous and devastating.
For years, the only treatments were hormones and hysterectomy. Endometrial ablation, a procedure during which the uterine lining is destroyed, can present women with an alternative to hysterectomy for reducing menstrual bleeding. Done in the office (or as an outpatient surgery, if needed), the procedure involves no cutting and does not require post-operative use of medications or hormones. No general anesthesia is required, and the procedure takes less than an hour.
